Full Description
9 October 1983. Fenland fieldwalking. Field of winter wheat, well weathered.
Context 1: odd sherds of medieval pottery over field. WPP AT (S1).
Context 2: at 5150 1490 concentration of medieval pottery, possibly including Late Saxon Stamford Ware at 7 feet (2.1m) OD, 37m north to south x 34m west to east. Moderate amounts of animal bone, abundant shell (pecten genus), moderate amounts of fired clay, some slate and modern brick. Post medieval element definitely present. On east side of droveway, colour of soil suggesting there may be a roddon here. Some of the material from Context 2 has been reidentified as a whetstone. WPP 16 (S2).
For full details of wares, flint types etc see Fenland Folders. (S3)
