Map

Public house.
2 stories with shaped gables.
Doric columned porch.
Late 17th or early 18th century.
Later extentions to rear to full height.
Visited E. Rose (NAU) 26 July 1975.

Listed Grade II, see (S1).
East shaped gable half removed by catslide extention, but west is visible above adjoining terrace.
Massive external chimney against east gable painted over but one presumes a later addition.
Facade of 3 bays is 18th century, but gables seem older, 17th century.
E. Rose (NAU) 25 May 1983.

Damaged by fire 25 February 1997.
See (S2) in file.
E. Rose (NLA) 26 February 1997.

The east gable stack is original, as shown by the moulded string purse that crosses it and the adjacent gable wall.
The end of this course also mark the former south-east quoins, now sealed by the catslide that also oversails the wall.
The bricks of the gable have diagonal skintlings but the facade has horizontals, so if it is 18th century it is after about 1780 and is more probably 19th century.
The east wall of the catslide has a tall round headed blank arch now sealed by a 19th century bay window.
A fire in February 1997 has not affected the original structure.
E. Rose (NLA) 28 February 1997.
