Map

Marks boundary between jurisdiction of the City of Norwich and Great Yarmouth. Set at junction of Yare and Chet, and possibly originally marked the end of Breydon Water. Dated by R.R. Clarke (NCM) to 14th/15th century, he says 'steps of base undoubtedly original'. He mentions a charter of Henry VIII referring to it. Another such charter is 1556.
(S1) gives a drawing showing it identical to present form.

April 1982. Visit.
Rectangular stone base with step on top, then chamfered base of cross itself. This does not look original, but this may be due to restoration. Reeded shaft is original, tapering to cornice and cross restored. On one side inscription 'REPARAT TEMPORE THOMAE ARMIGERI MAIORI CIVITATIS NOR.1676' and 'Repaired AD 1820'. The other side has 'Repaired AD 1834' with name of architect, an iron plaque marking a restoration in 1899, and another in 1971.
E. Rose (NAU), 29 April 1982.
