Summary

The current form of St Mary's is a west tower, nave and chancel. However, it began life in the early medieval period as a cruciform church, with both aisles and transepts that have since been demolished, although the south arcade remains. The present round west tower dates to the 13th century, as does the former south door and possible the chancel. The north arcade was remade in the 14th century, when the east wall of the chancel was rebuilt and a splendid four-light window with curvilinear tracery installed, possibly the best in the county. Inside is an important, if dour, tomb of 1605.

Full Description

Listed Grade I (S1).
E. Rose (NAU).

Norman cruciform church, aisles and transepts demolished, south arcade remains. Possibility of central tower. Present round west tower 13th century, also former south door, and possibly chancel. North arcade remade 14th century, and grand rebuilding of east chancel wall. 15th century reordering with new windows, chancel arch and tower arch.
Aisles demolished 1785. 19th century re-roofing and alterations. Important tomb of 1605. Good 19th century furnishings.
