Full Description
1968. Stray Find.
Two Late Bronze Age copper alloy socketed axes found together in trench for telephone duct.
1. Decorated with five raised ribs on each side: body tending to be hexagonal. Length 111 mm. See drawing (S1).
2. Narrow faceted octagonal type with ribs emphasising the facets. Length 102 mm. See drawing (S2).
These two sold at Christies March 4th 1969, lot 75 for 42 guineas to source [2].
Catalogued by Christies as from WALSINGHAM: for other finds from similar source, see Walsingham (NHER 2022).
Rumoured in 1968 that possibly two others found at same time and place and possibly two more at TF 9730 3892 (Binham Parish): NHER 2079 but attempts to verify this at the time were unsuccessful.
Four axes sold at Sothebys, June 12th, lot 189, possibly represent these finds (see Walsingham).
See published article (S3) for further details.
Information from (S4).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 22 February 2018.
Pendleton (S5) cites Sheringham HER 6327 / Baconsthorpe HER 6556, axes found in a cable trench, as a hoard. This is possibly a muddle with Walsingham HER 2022 / Hindringham HER 2078.
A. J. Lawson, 20 February 2012.
Both this site and NHER 2079 are marked as having produced "Bronze Axes" on a map drawn by [3] to indicate the locations of various discoveries made on the Field House estate [4]. This would suggest that Bronze Age objects were indeed found at both locations during the laying of cables in the 1960s.
P. Watkins (HES), 30 August 2016.
