Summary

In 1976 a well was discovered during the dredging of a lake or old flooded quarry pit. It was substantial, with a wall 30cm thick of flint pebbles cemented together, with a diameter of 1.2m. It has been referred to as the Well Street Well, and two medieval pottery sherds and three late medieval to early post medieval sherds were recovered from it. At the base was a possible timber frame, and tile, brick and bone fragments filled it. It is thought to date to no earlier than the 16th century.

Map

1976.
In small lake numbered by OS as parcel 70.
Well. Discovered in dredging lake (which may be old quarry pit) and accessible because of low water line due to drought. Of massive construction, 1ft (30cm) thick, flint pebbles cemented together. A willow tree around 100-150 years old grows out of it, and round this the interior contains peaty soil. From water line to present top around 3ft 0.9m), well 4ft (1.2m) diameter. Around it in peaty soil lie fragments of higher up the shaft which has been burst open by the tree. In soil above this is 19th/20th century rubbish. Two large fragments of lining removed to farmyard and cleaned (Park Farm): revealed interior rendering and one tiny red brick fragment between pebbles. Material very firm and strong. Was well dug out and left standing in digging pit, or is lake not a pit and was well dug to gain water not muddied by cattle?
E. Rose (NAU), 15 September 1976 with [1].
A. Lawson (NAU) notes - [1] calls Well Street Well.
When tree removed, two medieval sherds and three Transitional (late medieval to early post medieval) pottery sherds found below it. Tile, brick and bone in well fill, probably not before 16th century. At base of well timber frame?, layer of debris, leaves etc.
A. Lawson (NAU), 1981.
