Pre 1831.
Bronze flanged axe. Axe described by R.R. Clarke (NCM) as 'flat axe, broad blade end of blade and of butt and edge of blade slightly rough and broken. Zigzag ornament on blade'. He suggested it came from Castle Rising but did not state his evidence. (S1) states only 'bought at Litchfield's sale 1866, lot 49'. According to [1] this is the same axe as mentioned in (S2) as purchased by a Mr Lock of a brazier in 1831. [1] describes it as a 'hammer flanged axe with herringbone punched decoration on blade'.
Information from S. Margeson (NCM).
