Summary

Around 1981 a number of finds were recovered in the garden of this property, including a Mesolithic flint microlith, Mesolithic/Neolithic retouched and notched blades, and a range of later prehistoric objects, including a broken pick/axe, borer and retouched flakes. Medieval pottery sherds were also found. It is possible that the earth for the garden was imported from elsewhere and therefore that the finds might not belong to this area.

Map

April 1981. Stray Find.
Found in garden of 20 Hale Road (some material possibly imported to make-up garden):
12 prehistoric flint flakes, 2 notched flakes and 1 broken butt of pick or rough axe.
2 medieval pottery sherds (early medieval coarse wares).
Identified and compiled by A. Lawson (NAU), 26 June 1981. Information from (S1).

The medieval pottery sherds and a collection of worked flints from this site were subsequently donated to the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2001.46.1). All of the flints reported in 1981 were donated to the NCM, along with a number of what were presumably subsequent discoveries. The flints were briefly examined by P. Watkins (HES) in September 2014 and found to include:
1 microlith, 2 notched blade segments, 1 retouched blade segment, 1 notched blade-like flake, 1 broken pointed butt of a pick/axe, 1 boring (described in the museum's records as an "elaborate boring tool" and a number of miscellaneous retouched flakes. The collection also a small number of blades and a bag of flakes and other debitage. The microlith is Mesolithic and the blades are probably either Mesolithic or Early Neolithic. The remainder of the assemblage is most likely Neolithic.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 30 September 2014.
