Map

29 November 1982. Earthmoving for car park for Pilgrim Bureau watched at request of District Council.
Garden was raised about 1.5m above former farmyard on southeast, but 1.5m below level of parallel garden to north.
Mechanical excavation of east area, and hand dug test holes over rest of garden, revealed topsoil to beyond 0.75m depth (maximum that was to be removed). Contained only many oyster and cockle shells. Very few recent sherds and 19th century clay pipe. Also skeleton of an animal in tunnel 0.5m diameter, presented to NCM Natural History. Earth therefore imported in recent times? Under overgrowth on surface was found a rockery made of reused medieval
stonework including mullion and main mullion-base of an extremely large 15th century window, presumably from the priory. Also a colonette base built into former retaining wall at southeast corner (where a large stone block has been left also). Stonework rejected by NCM, now in rockery at 8 Northcote Road, Norwich.
E. Rose (NAU), 29 November 1982.

Rockery moved to 99 Eastgate Street, North Elmham.
E. Rose 15 April 1988.
