Summary

A moated site is visible on aerial photographs of this area. This feature seems likely to be a medieval moated house, and the name of the field suggests it may once have been a manor house. Metal detecting and trenching here found medieval coins, pottery sherds, brick and tile fragments as well as animal bones. No medieval structures were found although a prehistoric pot boiler site was identified.

1957. Quarter mile southeast of Lodge Farm in cutting drainage ditch through site of medieval moated house in Old Hall Meadow.
Manor site?
Medieval sherds and animal bones found.
Finds held by NCM.

1958.
Pot boiler site found.

1977. Excavation. Trenches dug inside moat.
No structures found.
Finds of 13th century pottery, brick and tile fragments, animal bone, shell.

1988. Found by metal detecting.
Roman and medieval coins and metalwork, including a Roman brooch.

The low earthwork medieval moat (see above) is visible on visualised lidar data from a survey flown in 2021 (S2). As the survey was flown relatively recently, it is likely that the features still survive as earthworks.
