Area centred TF 6195 1955 extended slightly to north-east to take in 'Area B' of All Saints' Street excavations.
1963-1970 (at some time). Excavation.
The earliest feature recorded on this site was a patch of cobbles, cut by a drainage channel. After this channel was dug the land to the north of it was covered by a layer of chalk, and a flimsy structure erected on the east. Pottery from these features consists of Grimston cooking-pots, Grimston Thetford-type ware, a few sherds of Stamford-type pottery and a blue-grey handled ladle. The absence of glazed wares suggests a 12th century date for these features, contemporary with the drainage phases identified at NHER 1146 to the west.
A layer of silt above these earliest features suggests a possible flood deposit. Above this lay a mortar floor. Pottery from this phase suggests a date in the 13th or 14th century.
The final phase of activity identified during the excavations was represented by two pits, a ditch and a drainage channel. Above these, which were filled with builders' rubble and occupation debris, were the foundations of brick walls which edged the site on the south and east. Finds from this phase included late medieval and post-medieval pottery and clay pipe stems.
