Full Description
February 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of an undated trapezoidal enclosure, other enclosures and linear ditches are visible on aerial photographs (S1-5). These cropmarks were previously recorded as NHER 1009 (context 154) but have now be restored to their original NHER number 13101. The central grid reference for these cropmarks is TG 3355 3206.
An incomplete trapezoidal enclosure is located at TG 3345 3218 and has maximum external dimensions of 80m by 54m. A broad ditch measuring up to 3m across defines its north, east and south sides. The western side of the enclosure is not clearly visible as cropmarks, but could be represented by two short sections of narrow ditch cropmark on a southwest to northeast alignment. Further ditch cropmarks inside and to the west of the enclosure are probably also related to it. A north to south aligned ditch cropmark extends for 122m from the southeast corner of the enclosure and could be contemporary with it. To the east of the enclosure are cropmarks of a possible incomplete rectilinear enclosure attached to a northwest to southeast aligned linear ditch. This enclosure measures 43m long by at least 19m wide externally. It is not possible to determine from the cropmark evidence whether it is contemporary with the trapezoidal enclosure or not. An L-shaped ditch on a similar alignment 115m to the southwest may be of a similar date.
To the west of these possible enclosures at TG 3361 3213 are cropmarks of an incomplete polygonal enclosure. Three sides of this enclosure are visible as cropmarks giving it external dimensions of 24m long by at least 13m wide. Attached to the northern side of this enclosure is an intermittent linear ditch that extends for 60m to the northwest. The other linear ditch cropmarks recorded within this group are two fragmentary to be related to each other. Although the enclosure cropmarks are undated, it is possible that they could be of late prehistoric or Roman date.
