Full Description
April 1978.
Tower in (S1) marked by (S2) as 'Queen Mary's Tower'.
(S3) called it round and castellated.
Only foundations remain .
E. Rose (NAU), 26 April 1978.
July 1997.
Landowner says it was destroyed by children.
Circular base with buttresses. Some brickwork apparently 17th century, but majority 19th century.
(S4) for 1851 (a compilation in the 1948 reprint) states that the tower was built so that the Countess could watch the building of the hall, which was left unfinished in 1851. But this cannot be completely correct given the above information; was it refurbished for her, hence the 19th century brickwork?
E. Rose (NLA), 29 July 1997.
2000.
The 1948 compiled version of (S4) is inaccurate.
The original of (S4) does not say the countess had the tower built in 1851, simply that she had a viewing gallery on top of it.
(S5) states that the tower was built in 1791 by Sir W. Jerningham and was simply known as 'Mary's Tower'. It was demolished in January 1972. Photographs are included in (S5).
During World War One, horses from an army camp were buried at the foot of the tower.
E. Rose (NLA), 10 January 2000.
