Summary

Wattlefield Hall is a late 18th- or early 19th-century house, bought by the Wymondham solicitor John Mitchell in 1856 and given a new south-east front. Outbuilding surrounding a courtyard to the west include an impressive early 19th-century stable court in the classical style (NHER 48604).

Large 19th-century hall in Neo-Jacobean style; three-bay façade with two stepped gables; similar gables on projecting bays on side walls. Bay windows; highly ornamented chimneys. Inside, a strapwork oak staircase, hall ceiling with large plaster pendant, stone fireplaces. Adjoining at rear smaller 18th century farmhouse of three bays, two storeys.

The 1994 relisting (S3) states the 19th-century section is by Buckler 1856.

2008.
Alterations to the single storey area currently housing the boiler room, a Snooker room and general services rooms attached to the main kitched have been proposed. A new roof structure is to be constructed above these rooms in order to create a first floor dwelling space.

An application was made to convert the attic rooms into habitable accommodation. Insert two new staircases with minor alterations to accommodate them. Also new roof insulation and re roofing of flat roof to add insulation.

Excerpt of current Listing Description:
Country house. Late 18th century with a large neo-Elizabethan front (south-east) added by Buckler 1856. Brick with pantiled roof to older rear, slate to front. Main front of two storeys and attic in three big bays, the outer bays being canted outwards. Central doorway. Fenestration of cross casements with 4-centered lights. Crenellated parapet. Two stepped gables each with an attic casement. Clustered stacks romantically placed. Lower rear wing of H-plan. Doorway faces stable court, under a four-light overlight. Three late 18th-century cross casements. Gabled roof and cross wings. South front remodelled early 19th century in three bays...
INTERIOR. Entrance hall with turned baluster staircase, moulded ramped and wreathed handrail. Linenfold panelling to principal room doors. Front left room with linenfold window screens with pierced and carved spandrels. Four-centred stone chimneypiece. Right-hand room with larger chimneypiece carved with rosettes and fleurons in frieze."

A late 18th-century barn and an early 19th century stable block that form the north and west sides of the stable court to the west of Wattlefield Hall were individually listed Grade II in 1992. These are now both recorded under NHER 48604.
