Full Description
Various objects found during the late 19th century and early-mid 20th century in the Ken Hill area of Snettisham parish, but with no additional information regarding provenance.
FINDS IN THE NORWICH CASTLE MUSEUM
This museum holds a flint saddle quern that was found on Ken Hill in 1953 (NWHCM : 1953.76 : A). Information from (S7).
Previously recorded as NHER 1498.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 11 December 2013.
FINDS IN THE CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY MUSEUM OF ARCHAEOLOGY AND ANTHROPOLOGY
This museum holds a collection of predominantly Mesolithic worked flints that were recovered in the Ken Hill area by H. le Strange, most likely during the 1960s or 1970s (accession number 51.509). The exact provenance of this material is not recorded, although le Strange recovered Mesolithic at several other sites on the western slopes of Ken Hill (NHER 1488, NHER 1489). The Mesolithic pieces in this collection are listed in (S1) as comprising:
1 flaked axe (without evidence of tranchet sharpening), 9 cores, 13 blades/flakes, 6 scrapers, 2 burins ('gravers'), 4 microliths and 7 miscellaneous pieces.
This assemblage was also examined by R. Jacobi, who noted the presence of 1 sharpening flake, 5 retouched blade, 2 other retouched pieces and 2 awls (presumably the 'gravers' identified by Wymer?). He identified the microliths as Class 1 obliquely-blunted points. Information from (S2).
It is unclear at present whether this collection includes later material, although this collection is not listed in (S3), suggesting that no diagnostic Neolithic material is present.
P. Watkins (HES), 11 December 2013.
