Summary

An unusual icehouse, which may be a form of ice well, probably dating from the mid 19th century.

Location

Map sheet TG20NE
Civil Parish BRAMERTON, SOUTH NORFOLK, NORFOLK

Map

Icehouse.
At east end of pond in front of Hall.
Very unusual.
Entrance passage is a staircase more like the entrance to a limekiln.. Halfway along is the usual inner doorway, here with a recess for the door to fold into the wall when open.
Drop of about 2.4m from base of steps to chamber floor according to owner. Dome, very small, partly destroyed by tree roots.
Indications suggest this was really a form of ice well.
To be restored?
Visited E. Rose (NAU) 20 August 1981.
