Summary

An earthwork bank visible on aerial photographs survived as a low earthwork in 1981. In 1970 part of it was seen in a cliff face. It has been interpreted as part of a Roman road, although it is more probable that it was a post medieval field boundary.

Map

1970. An 'agger' claimed running from southeast to northwest to cliff face.
However C.J.S. Green (NAU) says it is not an agger but a modern field bank.
At the grid reference (NHER 1274, context 1) material was found below the base of the bank in the cliff face, consisting of a spread of oyster shells about 36.6m to 45.7m (40 to 50 yards) wide and 15.25cm or 1.8m deep (6 inches or 6 feet deep, the card is not legible). 1.5m (5 feet) from present surface.
Sherds and stone also found.
E. Rose (NAU).

April 1981.
This bank is now only just visible as a slight rise under the earthworks of the golf course. It does seem very narrow for an agger.
E. Rose (NAU), 1 April 1981.

January 2001. NMP. (NGR amended from original of TF 6783 4235).
Linear bank earthwork visible on 1944 aerial photographs (S1) running from TF 6783 4234 to TF 6806 4221. Similar earthworks slightly to the south may be associated with this feature (NHER 26689 - also visible on (S1)).
A. Hunt (NMP), 17 January 2001.
