Summary

Fieldwalking and metal-detecting between 1984 and 2018 recovered prehistoric worked flints (including a Palaeolithic handaxe and a Neolithic polished axehead); Neolithic or Iron Age, Iron Age, Roman, Early Saxon, medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; Roman quern, window glass and roof tile fragments; Roman, Late Saxon, medieval and post-medieval coins (including a Roman hoard of six coins and five Late Saxon coins that may represent a dispersed hoard); a post-medieval jetton and a range of undated and Iron Age to post-medieval metal artefacts. These metal finds include undated metalworking debris, lead discs, lead balls, a lead pot mend and iron nail; Iron Age terrets and a harness strap slide; an Iron Age/Roman tankard handle; a Late Iron Age/Roman cosmetic mortar and bowl foot; Roman brooches, studs, terrets, a buckle, ring, box mount in the form of a bears head, lion head mount, cauldron repair, weight, steelyard and steelyard weight; an Early Saxon brooch; a Middle Saxon connecting bar or suspension link from chain; a Middle/Late Saxon hooked tag; a Late Saxon finger ring or ear ring; a Late Saxon/medieval zoomorphic terminal; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; medieval candlestick fragments, a bell, box or casket mount, hinge fragment, finger ring, rowel spur fragment, purse frame suspension loop and copper alloy vessel fragment; a medieval/post-medieval finger ring and upholstery stud and a post-medieval rumbler bell, book clasp, casket key, thimble, upholstery stud, decorative boss, spoon handle and lead weight.

It is notable that this site has now produced five pennies of Æthelred II (the Unready), all of which date to between 1009-1017. These may well represent a dispersed coin hoard or purse loss.
