Map

1981. Found with metal detector.
A copper alloy disc brooch complete with decoration and remains of the lug and catchplate on the reverse was recovered. The brooch had a milled border with a worn central debased royal portrait motif(?) and inscription(?) that seems to read OTM + IAD. The design may be based on a coin prototype.
See (S1) and (S2) for comparative purposes.
Brooch identified by S. Margeson (NCM) 19 November 1981.
W. Milligan (NCM) 19 November 1981.

February 1982. Metal detecting?
A gilt bronze mount with stamped decorations in form of shield with cross in centre was recovered.
Decoration identified by M. Archibald BM (CM) as HLVDOVVICVS IMP AVG, based on gold solidus of Louis the Pious 814-40. Possibly a Solidus forgery? Compare with Exeter example.
S. Margeson (NCM) May 1982.
