Summary

The site of a huge brickworks, which in the 19th century supplied bricks for many Norwich buildings. It closed in the late 1960s when all the suitable clay had been used up, and is now mostly built over.

Site of brick works which in 19th century supplied bricks for the Agricultural Hall, Royal Hotel, London Street Chemists and other Norwich buildings.
Closed late 1960s when last of clay on west side was found to be unusable.
Hoffman kilns.

1884 first edition 25 inch Ordnance Survey shows area of site in Catton/Hellesdon is only a small part of a huge area of brickworks extending inside Norwich boundary and including at least seven, perhaps twelve brick kilns, one of which is a Hoffman. Area mostly built over now, but part derelict.

A letter from Ruymp Ltd (the last owners of the site) to their clients states that the firm closed it brickmaking plant in 1967 due to it being unprofitable.
Shortly after the site began demolition of the majority of the works, including the chimney. (S2)
