Summary

Pieces of Roman pottery, the bones of young horses and pieces of worked wood were found in Kenninghall Fen when a water pipeline was excavated.

Map

September 1985. Found by workmen engaged on Anglian Water Authority pipeline at depth of 1m below fen surface in thin lens of fine silty sand with freshwater shells above around 30cm of lower peat, resting on silty sand.
Four sherds of Roman pottery including rim of red ware jar and fragment, of jar of dark ware with zone of burnished diagonal lines.
Bones of young horses (three mandibles, atlas vertebrae, radius and ulna and rib fragments).
Pieces of worked wood (two stake ends with axed points, peg and fragment of large chamfered plank). Much more reported in section.
Site visited by J.J. Wymer (NAU) on 5th September 1985 but backfilled and reverted to swamp.
