Full Description
1985-1986. Fieldwalking and metal-detecting. [1] and [2].
Found within former parkland ('Mere Field'), on five raised areas reported parallel to river:
To north, scatter of flint building material, many harness rings and large quantities lead musket balls.
Other finds included:
1 Palaeolithic ?handaxe. Ochreous staining, very sharp condition. Probably from river dredgings. See sketch (S1).
1 Neolithic flint knife.
3 undatable prehistoric flint scrapers.
1 Roman coin.
1 ?Roman unidentified copper alloy object.
1 Early Saxon cruciform brooch. See drawing (S2).
1 medieval buckle and 1 harness pendant,
1 ?medieval ?rocker arm.
3 post-medieval pottery sherds (1 Westerwald stoneware and 2 Bellarmine) and 1 lead cloth seal.
1 undatable buckle and 1 lead spindle whorl.
Flints identified by J. J. Wymer (NAU) and other objects by A. Rogerson. See list, descriptions and finder's notes in file. The handaxe is also sketched on (S3) and listed in (S4) and (S5), although little additional information is given. These finds are also noted on (S6).
