Summary

Fieldwalking in 1986 by the Fenland Survey recovered a number of concentrations of medieval pottery sherds, some in combination with bone and shell fragments. A small number of Middle and Late Saxon pottery sherds were also recovered, and a possible medieval drove was noted.

13 January 1986. Fenland fieldwalking on well weathered ploughsoil (S1).
Context 1: General scatter medieval sherds. TSC BN.
Context 2 at 5415 1775. Scatter medieval pottery including St Neots (AD 1000 to 1200) ware, sparse, sparse shell, very sparse bone. post medieval rubbish abundant on north side scatter. Treated with caution because apparently in fill of old dyke close to it so may not be genuine 'site'. 24m east to west x 20m north to south at 2.4m OD. TSC BM.
Context 3 at 5396 1790. Two small groups of Ipswich ware (Middle Saxon) set in grey soil on top and north side low roddon. About half a dozen or so sherds in each and odd medieval sherds also. 33m east to west x 33m north to south, and 15m x 15m against dyke edge, at 2.7m OD. TSC 17
Context 4 at 5412 1797. Concentration medieval pottery sparse to moderate, ditto shell, and extremely sparse bone.
Very little post medieval material. Set on west edge of drove. 22m north to south x 20m east to west at 2.7m OD. TSC 18.
Context 5 at 5415 1790. Concentration medieval pottery, sparse to moderate, ditto shell, very very sparse bone, very sparse post medieval debris. On west side drove. 42m north to south x 19m east to west 2.7m OD. TSC 19.
Context 6 at 5416 1784. Concentration medieval pottery, moderate, sparse to moderate shell, and sparse bone. post medieval material uncommon. On west edge drove. 43m north to south x 36m east to west at 2.7m OD.
Context 7 at 5418 1778. Concentration sparse medieval pottery, sparse to moderate shell, very very sparse bone. Sparse post medieval rubbish. On west edge drove. 29m east to west x 27m north to south at 2.7m OD. TSC 21.

A. Rogerson's (NAU) plot of Ipswich ware (Middle Saxon) in file shows context 3, and few sherds at south end not at context 8 but further east- part of Context 1.
Correction to Context 8 entry above: Middle Saxon sherds are from dyke cleaning; medieval sherds only from ploughsoil.

Some of the pottery from Context 6 has been reidentified as Late Saxon, and some from Context 1 as Middle Saxon and Late Saxon.
