Unstratified artefacts recovered on the section of Happisburgh beach between the structures associated with the Happisburgh World War Two Coastal Battery (NHER 18472) and the Happisburgh access ramp.
1978. Stray Find.
Found by [1] on beach near the lifeboat station at approximately [2]:
1 Palaeolithic flint handaxe. Slightly rolled ovate in black flint. See drawings (S1) and (S2).

Found on Happisburgh beach during the 1990s (certainly pre 1997), in area centred [5] (Context 1):
1 Lower Palaeolithic flint handaxe. Oval, with unusual nose-like point that contrasts with the generally only slightly pointed ovates that are generally found on north-east Norfolk beaches. Very lightly rolled. See drawing (S9).

1 Palaeolithic flint handaxe of cordate form. Very sharp and without significant recent damage. Slightly blunted by battering. See drawings (S10) and (S11).

Although recorded as Lower Palaeolithic the form of this thin, cordate handaxe strongly suggests it is of Middle Palaeolithic date - potentially a bout coupe type, although it is difficult to be certain due to extensive recent edge damage.
