Full Description
9 June 1980. NAU air photography.
Positive cropmarks of linear and rectilinear ditches. Enclosure - near square - with central 'L' shaped feature. Whole divided into two by large wide ditch feature which continues north to south on either side and presumably cutting through the earlier enclosure. Another similar straight ditch feature is parallel to the first and some little distance to the east.
D. Edwards (NAU), 27 September 1982.
April 2010. Norfolk NMP.
A rectilinear enclosure, and possibly associated linear features can be seen as positive cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1-2) of the area to the west of St Faith’s Road, Old Catton, centred on TG 2298 1328. The features are all undated.
The enclosure measures 54m by 56m internally, and a maximum of 60m by 62m externally, being slightly broader at its southern end. It is oriented northeast-southwest, and is bisected north-south by a linear ditch, with a second ditch running parallel 80m to the east.
A second possible rectilinear enclosure is visible 117m to the south west, centred on TG 2282 1322. Only three sides of the enclosure are visible, and it measures 39m by at least 42m.
Whilst it is possible that these features may be related to the possible Iron Age to Roman field system to the north east (NHER 53493), it seems more likely that they are medieval to post medieval in date, and may relate to St Faithswood Farm depicted on Faden's Map of Norfolk (S3).
E. Bales (NMP), April 2010.
September 2025. Record reviewed as part of the Forestry Commission Project K
The rectilinear enclosure and possibly associated linear features (see above) are also visible as cropmarks on S4.
J. Powell (Norfolk County Council Environment Team), 02 September 2025
