Summary

Cropmarks visible on aerial photographs of this location were originally thought to represent a building of unknown date. However, when the cropmarks were mapped in 2010 it was noted that this feature was potentially a remnant of agricultural activity in the area, as it coincided with the agricultural tramlines in the field. This was confirmed by archaeological work undertaken between 2011 and 2020, with three geophysical surveys and trial trenching all failing to find any evidence for associated sub-surface remains.

Map

June 1974. NAU Aerial Photpgraphy.
Cropmarks in grounds of Thickthorn Hall.
A long rectangular cropmark running roughly north to south and positioned between trees.
The cropmark is negative, indicating a structure with substantial foundations still in situ, and has internal divisions at the south end.
See overlays for 1:2500 sheets TG 1705 and TG 1805 and NAU NHER Map TG 10 NE.
E. Rose (NAU) 22 November 1976. Updated D. Edwards (NAU) 18 January 1980. Updated H. Hamilton (HES), 30 May 2013.

July 2010. Norfolk NMP.
A possible structure is visible as a negative cropmark on aerial photographs (S1-S3), centred on TG 1794 0537.
The cropmark measures 117m by 27m externally, and appears to exhibit some internal features. It is quite possible, however, that this feature is a remnant of agricultural activity in the area, as it coincides with the agricultural tramlines, and has therefore been recorded with a note of caution.
E. Bales (NMP), 20 July 2010.

March 2011. Geophysical Survey.
This survey of the northern half of the field recorded no evidence for sub-surface remains associated with this cropmark.
See report (S4) and NHER 65020 for further information.
P. Watkins (HES), 17 May 2021.

March 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of land to be affected by proposed improvements to A11/A47 Thickthorn Junction (Area 4).
Although the area examined coincided with the southern end of these cropmarks there was again no evidence for associated sub-surface remains.
See report (S5) and NHER 65020 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 7 June 2021.

July-August 2020. Trial Trenching.
This evaluation of land to be affected by proposed improvements to the A11/A47 Thickthorn Junction saw several trenches excavated across the cropmarks. Unsurprisingly, given the previous negative results, there was no evidence for associated sub-surface remains. Although a ditch coincided with one side of the 'building' this was most likely coincidental.
It is highly likely that, as suggested in 2010, these cropmarks were actually the result of agricultural activity on the site, rather than below ground remains.
See report (S6) and NHER 65020 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 7 June 2021.

November-December 2020. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of land to be affected by proposed improvements to A11/A47 Thickthorn Junction (Area 10).
This survey saw the re-examination of the area examined in 2011.
There was again no evidence for remains associated with these cropmarks.
See NHER 65020 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 7 June 2021.
