Full Description
This is marked as an antiquity on 1st edition 1 inch Ordnance Survey map of 1836 (S1), and drawn as a barrow. It is in a fold of the 100 foot contour.
E. Rose (NAU), 29 February 1980.
Visited by A. Lawson (NAU), 25 June 1980.
Apparently natural gorse covered mound.
Pill box on south crest, very overgrown.
Source notes: not pillbox found on south slope. Is this a mistake for site NHER 33310 to north?
E. Rose (NLA), 4 December 1997.
June 2003. Norfolk NMP.
Area of World War Two trenches visible on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S2). These are located along the sides and top of the elongated mound, interpreted as being natural. The top of the mound has a curvilinear trench running from TG 1163 4283 to TG 1166 4282, 1 to 2m wide. Several other slightly narrower and zigzag trenches run along the sides of the mound and meet with the main trench. Another wider zigzag trench runs from TG 1161 4282 to TG 1162 4284, this appears to be blocking off the approach to the mound. These earthworks attest to World War Two military activity, however no sign of a pillbox could be seen on the 1946 aerial photographs. It is possible that it was well camouflaged, although you would expect to be able to see it on later photography.
S. Massey (NMP), 30 June 2003.
