Summary

Neolithic worked flints (including a leaf-shaped arrowhead, plano convex knives and a Neolithic polished axehead) and Beaker period pottery fragments were found here. Fieldwalking as part of the Fenland Survey identified several concentrations of prehistoric worked and burnt flints. The worked flints included a small number of Mesolithic and Mesolithic/Early Neolithic pieces and scatters of predominantly Early Neolithic and Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age date. Small quantities of animal bone and several sherds of prehistoric pottery were also found. Later fieldwalking recovered Late Neolithic or Early Beaker period flints and pottery. Metal-detecting in 2022 recovered an Early/Middle Bronze Age copper alloy flat axehead.

Several discrete concentrations of material identified:

Site FWL 72 (Context 6 at [1]).
On edge of ridge above peat. Sparse spread of flints, 'pot boilers' and bone. Max dimensions 33m E/W 20m N/S. Flints likely to be predominantly Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age, although a small number of Mesolithic/Early Neolithic pieces were also identified.

Site FWL BQ (Context 7 at [2]).
On edge of chalk ridge adjacent to peat. Occasional flints and 'pot boilers'. Area c. 20m x 15m. Worked flints not closely datable. This site is not mentioned in the final report.

Site FWL BP (Context 8 at [3]).
Scattered over two parallel chalk drift ridges. Occasional flints, one or two bits of bone and ?fired clay. Hint of shells. Insufficient finds to make a concentration. This site is not mentioned in the final report.

Site FWL CA (Context 1; general scatter).
Occasional flints from field. Not closely datable. This site is not mentioned in the final report.

Site FWL CB (Context 9 at [4]).
On chalk drift ridge. Scatter of worked flints, couple of bone fragments and occasional 'pot boiler'. Max dimensions 30m N/S x 19m E/W. Site not mentioned in final report.

Site FWL CC (Context 10 at [5]).
On chalk drift ridge (c. 8m OD) just emerging from peat. Small scatter of flints (not closely datable). This site is not mentioned in the final report.

Site FWL 81 (Context 11 at [6]).
On low ridge slope above peat hollow. Sparse concentration of flints with occasional fragments of bone, 'pot boilers' and pottery sherds (date not specified). Max dimensions 22m E/W x 25m N/S. Worked flints not closely datable.

Site FWL 82 (Context 12 at [7]).
On ridge. Sparse concentration of flints with a few 'pot boilers' and two bone fragments. Max dimensions 17m N/S 25m E/W. The worked flints were predominantly Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age in date, although a small number of Mesolithic pieces were also identified.

Site FWL 83 (Context 13 at [8]).
On ridge above peat. Sparse to moderate spread of worked flints, with moderate to abundant 'pot boilers' (particularly at north end of scatter), as well as a few pieces of bone. Max dimensions 31m E/W x 25m N/S. The worked flints (which included an oblique arrowhead) were predominantly of Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age date. Several sherds of prehistoric pottery were also recovered; 1 indet. prehistoric sherd, 1 Beaker sherd and 2 ?Beaker sherds.

Site FWL 84 (Context 14 at [9]).
On north side of island. Moderate spread of flint with a few 'pot boilers' and two sherds of indet. prehistoric pottery. Max dimensions 33m E/W x 25m N/S. The worked flint assemblage included an arrowhead fragment and was predominantly Early Neolithic in date.
