Full Description
1829. Stray Find.
Found by Rev. George Munford when inspecting the submerged forest at 'Thornham Scalp', near Hunstanton:
Neolithic brown polished flint axe 4.25" [10.7cm] long with thin butt, convex faces and squared sides. See drawing (S1).
Now part of the Norwich Castle Museum Woodward Collection (NWHCM : 1838.59).
It is described in (S2) as having been found lying "in the prostrate trunk of one of these tree, imbedded about an inch and a half by its cutting edge". This discovery was subsequently noted in a number of 19th century publications including (S3), (S4), (S5) and (S6).
The peat in which it was discovered is zone VIIb (S7).

The Scalp was an island, marked on (S11) and (S12), now vanished. Position marked on map.
