Summary

Medieval and post-medieval finds including pottery, bricks, roof tile, animal bones, clay pipes and other finds recovered from drainage trenches being dug for a new building in 1984. An almost complete medieval Grimston-ware jar, found in 1984, was identified and drawn in 2011.

Map

August 1984. Observation of drainage trenches being excavated for new building about 2m deep. Trenches along west and south sides. Also re-excavation around manhole in roughly central position.
Many recent disturbances to about 2m; silt visible in places at depth of about 1.5m, occasionally with thin layer of peaty detritus immediately above. All finds from spoil heaps.
Much building debris including some medieval brick and many peg-roof tiles, some of which were presumably late medieval; none collected. Also much animal bone and some shell not collected.
2 medieval unglazed jar rims, 6 bodysherds, 12 glazed Grimston sherds including one with slip decoration. 1 late Grimston sherd with internal and external thick glaze, 1 base, 1 rim and 2 sherds 16th - 17th century stoneware. 1 sherd ?Bourne D. 1 base, 1 sherd Surrey whiteware, 1 dish Staffs press moulded combed slipware. 2 rims post medieval oxidised slip ware from same pot. 5 glazed red earthenware. Clay pipe bowls; 2 18th century, 1 19th.

These limited observations suggest more medieval finds from central and eastern parts of site.
