Map

1948. Stray Find.
From Methwold Mill Pond:
1 Palaeolithic flint handaxe in "Middle Acheulian style". See sketch (S1).
Information from record card (S2).

This handaxe would be classified as either a pointed or a ficron type (Wymer class F or M). The sketch records the handaxe as being held by the King's Lynn Museum and being originally from "Mill Pond, Methwold". Unfortunately no such object can be identified in the present museum records. The provenance of this object is similarly uncertain, as no location within this parish appears to have been known as 'Mill Pond' (although it should perhaps be noted that there is such a site in nearby Lakenheath). The only possibility is a small pond that lay at TL 754 945 (visible on the 1st Edition O.S map), close to an area that appears to have been known as Mill Hill (see NHER 4945).

This find is listed in (S3). It is also noted on (S4) and in (S5), (S6) and (S7) although no additional information is given.
