Summary

The First Edition Ordnance Survey map marks this as the location of the discovery of 'Danish cons' in 1822. Other 19th century documents indicate that the coins were found near 'a curious pavement' and in the vicinity of 'entrenchments'.

1822. Casual Observation.
'Danish coins found' marked on First Edition Ordnance Survey Map (S4). Hoard? Listed in Late-19th century gazetteer (S6) under Barney.
Information from record card (S1).

White's History (S5) couples this find with a 'tessellated pavement' and 'earthworks still visible' and said the coins were brass, in the collection of Phillippo at Phillippo's Farm, but the present owners there have no knowledge of them.

Actual quote from White's History (S5) is 'On the Hills east of the village are traces of entrenchments near which a curious pavement and several brass coins were found and are now in the possession of Mr W. S. Philippo'.
