Summary

Fieldwalking in 1984 by the Fenland Survey recovered a general scatter of medieval pottery sherds from across this field, becoming quite dense to the west. Two concentrations of medieval pottery sherds were also noted, in conjunction with bone and shell fragments and post medieval fired clay, slate and slag. Three Late Saxon pottery sherds were also recovered.

7 March 1984. Well weathered plough soil with young winter wheat.
Context 1: general scatter medieval sherds becoming quite dense to west especially around Context 2. (S1).
Context 2: at 5202 1758. Concentration medieval pottery on edge of field, silt showing some sign of discolouration. Animal bone sparse to moderate, shell moderate to abundant. Limited amount post medieval debris including fired clay, slag, and slate. Apparent all along field edge and may relate both to late usage of site and infilling of roadside dyke (which may have removed some of medieval site). 50 x 40m. (S2).

Addenda:
Context 3: at 5197 1753. Small concentration medieval sherds. Bone sparse; shell moderate to abundant; fired clay abundant and so is building rubble of post medieval date. Very small amount post medieval pottery. Not on roddon. 25 x 8m. Three Late Saxon Thetford sherds. (S3).
