Summary

Fieldwalking as part of the Fenland Survey recovered a concentration of prehistoric burnt flint with virtually no flint waste on the edge of a sand and gravel island, which was at one stage covered with peat. The burnt material is almost certainly flinty gravel derived from the island.

17 November 1983. Fenland fieldwalking. Northwest of Shrubhill Claypit (Palaeolithic site).
Good conditions, recently ploughed, well weathered. Gamekeeper stated field deep ploughed.
Concentration of burnt flint with virtually no flint waste. 1.8m (6 feet) OD 37m north to south x 14m east to west but odd fragments for another 50m south. On edge of sand and gravel island, which was at one stage covered with peat. Burnt material is almost certainly flinty gravel derived from island. Only few burnt fragments kept for reference. FWL 1.
