Summary

In 1948 a Mesolithic flint tranchet axehead was found at this location. A Late Upper Palaeolithic flint blade and an Early Neolithic flint leaf arrowhead found by the same finder in Stalham between 1949 and 1951 were probably also recovered in roughly the same area.

Civil Parish STALHAM, NORTH NORFOLK, NORFOLK

Map

1948. Stray Find.
Found by [1] "north of Wayford bridge" (NCM map sheet adds "?from carted material"):
1 Mesolithic tranchet-type flint axe. Donated to Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1949.87).
Information from (S1). According to (S2) this item was previously numbered twice by mistake (the second record - NHER 8190 - is now deleted).
This axehead is listed in (S3) and described in more detail in (S4).
The NCM also holds a ?Mesolithic flint blade with the same accession number that was presumably found at the same site.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 5 June 2014.

1949. Stray Find.
Found by [1] "north of Wayford Bridge":
1 Late Upper Palaeolithic "giant flint blade-flake". Held by Norwich Castle Museum but unregistered when identified by J. J. Wymer (NAU) in 1986. Information from (S2). This find is described as a 197mm long blade in (S5), which lists the museum accession number of the earlier find (NWHCM : 1949.87). It should be noted that this is not the same blade as that recorded above.
Although not necessarily from the same site as the 1948 find, the similarity of the recorded information makes this a strong possibility.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 5 June 2014.

1951. Stray Find.
Found by [1] 'By Wayford Bridge'.
1 Early Neolithic flint leaf arrowhead.
1 Neolithic flake.
Both held by NCM, but unregistered when identified in 1986. Again, these items are not certainly from the same site as the Mesolithic axe but the other details of finder etc. make this a strong possibility.
E. Rose (NAU) 16 September 1986. Information from (S2).
The leaf arrowhead is noted in (S6).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 5 June 2014.
