Summary

A circular cropmark initially interpreted as a possible Bronze Age ring ditch is visible on 1974 aerial photographs. Although what appears to be a corresponding cropmark is also visible on aerial imagery from 1999 archaeological work undertaken between 2024 and 2025 suggests this is actually most likely natural in origin.

Location

Map sheet TF71SW
Civil Parish NARBOROUGH, BRECKLAND, NORFOLK

Map

Ring ditch with two gaps (almost exactly coinciding with fifty foot contour on 6 inch Ordnance Survey map) and to north two semicircular marks.
E. Rose (NAU), 20 October 1976.

The previously noted ring-ditch is potentially a circular cropmark visible at this location on Google Earth imagery (S1). This feature (Context 1) is centred at TF 74938 12046 and has a diameter of approximately 35m.
P. Watkins (HES), 24 July 2026.

August 2024. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetic gradiometer survey of proposed development site.
This survey identified a broad, curvilinear negative response that clearly coincides with the southern half of the circular cropmark visible on (S1). It should be noted that this was felt to be potentially either natural in origin or associated with remnants of a bank.
See report (S2) and NHER 56277 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 24 July 2026.

August 2025. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
Although two of the trenches coincided with the cropmark possible ring-ditch visible on (S1) at TF 74938 12046 (Context 1) there was no evidence for associated sub-surface remains. The excavated evidence suggests that this cropmark and its associated geophysical anomaly actually correspond with a natural rise in ground level, a layer to the south of which was investigated and deemed to be geological in origin.
See report (S3) and NHER 56277 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 24 July 2026.
