Full Description
Along north boundary of land of former Public House.
October 1987. Disturbed soil where new fence put in, unweathered soil.
Glazed Grimston, mostly 'late' medieval, sherds.
Identified by A. Rogerson (NAU) 13 October 1987.
1988-1989. Excavation.
Excavation of pottery production site.

Monitoring of commercial excavation to south of excavated area, where site continues under modern buildings.
Late Saxon and medieval sherds in small quantities.

January-February 1992. Excavation.
Further excavations adjacent to 1988 to 1989 site. Contexts 1015 to 1175 used.
Evidence for Saxo-Norman domestic occupation comprising ditch and two pits.
In 12th century a hollow way was developed (under modern Vong Lane) and a back lane established. Between these were a post-in-trench building, several pits, and a well.
13th century. Earlier features replaced by a new system of toft ditches.
No evidence for late occupation. No kilns found.
