Map

Course of old road.
First part, as far as towards Fox Covert, is marked on (S1).
(S2) calls it Roman because he claimed he could see an agger on the section west of Denbeck Wood. However his claim of another bank at east end is probably only the parish boundary bank.
The section past Fox Covert is now an orchard and the owners apparently said that the road was easily visible when ploughed up; but the route east of here cannot really be decided.
Another man told [1] that his father remembers the road being closed before the land became crown property, and that a local man used to drive his cart through the crops insisting it was a right of way.
E. Rose (NAU) 1978.

5 April 1984. Western end visited by E. Rose (NAU) with [2].
'Agger' is in fact only length of about 8m where track diverges from road still in use. It is about 0.5m high and 2m across; not really convincing as Roman. Continuation of course towards Denbeck villa shown by dark soil in ploughed field, but this could be dredgings from ditch beside line.
E. Rose (NAU).

August-September 2017. Test Pitting.
Excavation of test pit at TF 7084 2738, at location of planned drill pit on route of Hillington S101a pipeline scheme (Test Pit 7).
No topsoil was present in the southernmost test pit, with the subsoil overlain by a thick layer of modern rubble. This was though seen as being associated with the modern track to the west.
See NHER 69460 for further details.
