Summary

Fieldwalking in 1985 by the Fenland Survey recovered a number of Roman and medieval pottery sherds from this site, as well as noting three concentrations of Roman and medieval material. This included pottery sherds, bone fragments and possible briquetage.

Map

1 April 1985. Fieldwalking on well weathered ploughsoil.
Context 1: general scatter pottery, mostly Roman from west end field, particularly around 5409 1350 and some medieval sherds from east end field. TYL CC (S1).
Context 2 at 5416 1346: odd Roman sherds, may link with context 3; some indications of grey soil. Some of the material from Context 2 has been reidentified as medieval pottery. TYL CD (S2).
Context 3 at 5421 1346: concentration of sparse Roman pottery set in grey silt. Couple of fragments of bone and also quite a lot of modern debris. Possibly extends into context 2. 40m NW-SE x 30m NE-SW at 1.5m OD. TYL 31 (S3).
Context 4 at 5415 1350: small dense concentration of Roman sherds in small pocket of grey soil, pottery spreading beyond just its edges. May be odd fragments of briquetage and some modern rubbish 16m NW/SE x 14m at 1.5m OD. TYL 32 (S4).
