Map

30 March 1977.Visited.
South-west gable wall of flint, and heavy chamfered at west corner. Façade of brick, panelled, 18th century.
Rear penthouse of same construction, enclosing a 17th century porch? With shaped gable. Fair condition.
E. Rose (NAU).

Separate timber framed bakehouse which stood north of main house demolished 1982.

Dated by E. Rose and District Council as 19th century, though [1] suggested it was 16th century as a building on that site was marked on a 16th century map.

After demolition, trenches for new building dug to 1.5m, revealed footings of flint and brick, all about 1800 but to a surprising depth of almost 2m. Was a cellar planned and not carried out?
Finds made by [1] were all late 19th century except 1 iron tie bracket of about 1800 and 3 sherds Westerwald found in soil face of trench about 1m deep.
E. Rose (NAU) 23 August 1982.

(S2) in file.

(S1) notes that George Sawyer lived in this house or one on its site in 1617 and a letter refers to how he introduced an upper floor into the parlour chamber and was then puzzled as to how to get the bed in.
E. Rose (NLA), 10 February 2004.
