Summary

In 1972 construction work on this site uncovered seven brick arches just below the ground surface. It is thought that these represent the remains of a post medieval brick kiln infilled with soil.

Civil Parish TERRINGTON ST CLEMENT, WEST NORFOLK, NORFOLK

Map

1972.
Brick kiln found 'opposite Terrington Court' in building bungalow.
Information from Ordnance Survey card (S1), from KLM.
Exact location from KLM map (S2).
Details are: a sewer being laid at depth of 1ft (30cm) cut seven brick arches. Possibly a brick kiln [1].

29 October 1987.
Location confirmed in letter from [2], to R. Silvester (NAU). Letter and map in file.
Slides sent to NAU at same time show the seven 'arches' as red layers above black convex surfaces.
These might well be arches of a kiln infilled with soil, but red layers on slides are not clear and it is not possible to see if they are brick vaults or simply layers of burnt clay.
One slide shows a brick presumably a sample - of the arches, or a loose find?
If these are arches this suggests a kiln of quite late date, mid 19th century or later.
Compiled by E. Rose (NAU), 16 November 1987.

2006. Excavation.
Excavations on brick kiln site by [3]. See photos in file.
Details awaited.
