Full Description
1976. Stray Find.
Found in loam above gravel in cutting dyke (3 ft [0.9m] deep):
1 Palaeolithic flint handaxe. Heavy and rather crude and made on a pebble without cortex, but the dull surface on the pebble partially remains on both sides of the tool. The flint is dark grey, partly patinated white more on one side than the other. In fresh, but not mint condition. Maximum length 12.1cm. Tip damaged. See drawing (S1).
Identified and compiled by A. J. Lawson (NAU), 26 October 1977. Information from (S2).
This discovery was first reported in (S3). This object is also noted on (S4) and in (S5). Wymer notes that its sharp condition may indicate it had been in a primary context (S5). Also listed in (S6) and (S7), although no additional information is given.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 4 July 2014.
