Summary

In 1936 a Bronze Age barrow was found in a field to the north of the road from Wilby to New Barn, and is visible on aerial photographs of the area from 1947. A number of prehistoric flint flakes were also found in close association. Unfortunately, recent ploughing has served to spread the barrow materials out.

The barrow described above is visible as an earthwork mound on aerial photographs from 1947 (S2-S3). It is centred on TM 0428 8966 and measures up to 34m in diameter.
It is notable that this barrow is on slightly higher ground than those recorded in the area (eg NHER 57380), and is situated approximately 500m or more from the nearest water source. However, there are a number of possible pingo features, or former ponds, within the field, approximately 175m to the north.
E. Bales (NMP), 11 July 2012.
