Summary

Fieldwalking in 1985 by the Fenland Survey recovered a scatter of medieval pottery sherds close to a possible medieval trackway. Two concentrations of medieval objects were also noted, including pottery sherds, shell and bone fragments, a long cross silver penny and post medieval debris. One Late Saxon sherd was also recovered.

16 April 1985. Fieldwalking on weathered ploughsoil.
Context 1: general scatter medieval sherds, mostly from southeast part close to drove. TYL CH (S1).
Context 2 at 5524 1610: small group medieval pot from shell on edge of field. Swamped by post medieval debris. On north edge medieval drove. Around 15m west to east x 25m north to south at 2.7m OD. TYL CG (S2).
Context 3 at 5529 1618: Concentration sparse to moderate medieval sherds, moderate shell, few bits bone, and long cross silver penny. On edge medieval drove. Rather diffuse concentration and no obvious soil staining. One Late Saxon sherd. Further sherds along rest of drove edge towards context 2. 29m northwest to southeast x 41m northeast to southwest at 2.4m OD. TYL 34 (S3).
