Summary

A mound is visible on two estate maps (dating to about 1600 and about 1700). As a Roman road appears to have been diverted around the mound, it has been suggested that the mound was a Bronze Age barrow. Nothing can be seen today.

Civil Parish BAWDESWELL, BRECKLAND, NORFOLK

Map

A mound depicted on (S1) and (S2) as on heathland immediately south of kink in Roman road [NHER 2796] may represent a barrow.
Noted by R. Rickett (NAU).
E. Rose (NAU), 13 September 1982.

The area is accompanied by the label 'Gravell Hill' on the same 1600 map (S1), but this is probably a description, especially as the 'Blacke Hyll' is drawn as a mound and the former is not.
The mound is not now extant.

The Common is ploughed and has an undulating surface which makes the certain identification of a mound vestige impossible.
A. Lawson (NAU), 28 September 1982.

Another possible barrow has been reported to the west of this location, at NHER 11879, also adjacent to the Roman road [NHER 2796]. The basis of its identification remains uncertain. It is therefore possible that this is the actual location of the barrow/ring ditch.
H. Hamilton (NLA), 25 January 2008.
