Summary

In 1983 a narrow band of flint, brick and pottery was ploughed up at this site. The end of this linear feature is recorded as having coincided with a former parish boundary, which would suggest it was actually noted a little to the west of its mapped location. It is possible it related to a former road shown on a map of 1797, the line of which appears to have appears to have probably coincided with this section of the Catton/Spixworth parish boundary.

Map

Years before 1983. Casual Observation.
Ploughed up.
Narrow band of flint, brick and some pottery, running about 800m north to south coinciding at south end with line of parish boundary.
Details from member of the public [1].
Compiled by A. Gregory (NAU), 10 March 1983. Information from record card (S1).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 1 May 2023.

September 2012-March 2013. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development area.
This survey identified a linear anomaly that coincides with the recorded line of this band of debris. It should though be noted that this is also the line of a former field boundary that can be seen on the Catton tithe map (S2) and it is probable that the geophysical anomaly represents a ditch associated with this former feature. The description of this band of debris as having coincided with the parish boundary would also suggest that it was actually encountered to the west of its mapped location. This description is also significant as this section of the parish boundary appears to fossilise the line of a former road or track shown on Faden’s map of 1797 (S3). A north-north-west to south-south-east aligned bank visible on aerial photographs of this location is also likely to relate to this former road (part of a group of three linear features recorded as NHER 53497).
See report (S3) and NHER 66875 for further details.
