Summary

Fieldwalking in 1985 by the Fenland Survey recovered a scatter of medieval pottery sherds from across this field, as well as noting three concentrations of material. These include Late Saxon, medieval and post medieval pottery sherds, bone fragments, brick and shell. An infilled dyke and a roddon were also noted. Further fieldwalking in 2007 recovered a selection of medieval/post medieval pottery.

21 April 1985. Fieldwalking on well weathered ploughsoil.
Context 1: general scatter medieval sherds and 1 Late Saxon sherd. TYL CM (S1).
Context 2 at 5615 1677: Concentration moderate medieval sherds and shell, sparse bone, on edge of drove. Post medieval debris moderate, particularly brick, silt stained grey. And one Late Saxon sherd. 37m northeast to southwest x 35m 2.1m OD. TYL 38 (S2).
Context 3 at 5626 1863: Concentration of sparse medieval pottery and shell, few fragments bone. Post medieval rubbish sparse to moderate. Possibly edge of a green 38m northeast to southwest x 30m northwest to southeast with further light scatter of shell and few sherds to south. 1.8m OD. TYL 39 (S3).
Context 4 at 5620 1660: Concentration of medieval sherds sparse to moderate, sparse shell, few fragments bone. Post medieval material sparse but to northeast moderate where dyke infilled on top broad roddon. Also Late Saxon sherds. C.56m west to east x 34 north-Sat 2.1m OD. TYL 40 (S4).
