Map

January 1984 and February 1987. By old pit adjacent to road, well discovered, of flint with lime mortar.
Adjacent tunnel drain with arched top formed of flints set in clay.
Not traced in trial hole further to north.
See (S1) and (S2) in file.
This seems quite unusual. It imitates the form of 16th to 17th century brick drains but I have never seen one in flint before. One would associate it with Clipstreet Farm which is 16th to 17th century. The layout would then be like that at Thornage Hall, so it is strange that it was not found further north. [1] thinks it did not work properly, and this would not be at all surprising.
E. Rose (NAU) 16 February 1988.
