Summary

This is the site of the medieval hospital of St John the Baptist which was founded before 1135. After the Dissolution the site was redeveloped along the course of what is now Norfolk Street.

1967. Field Observation.
Traces of what appears to be the remains of the hospital of St. John the Baptist were located at no. 50 Norfolk Street (NHER 58826).

According to (S2) the hospital of St John the Baptist was situated in the Dam Gate of Lynn. On (S3) Norfolk Street was called Damp Gate Street and traces of a building believed to be the hospital were found at 50 Norfolk Street. According to (S4) the hospital was founded around 1135, dissolved in 1545 and consisted of a master and brethren with church, hospital, hall, chambers, houses and a court. This description of the hospital in the 13th century also appears in (S3) which notes that the hospital was the gift of Richard de Brecham to the master and brethren. (S3) also states that in 1536 the hospital was valued at £7 6s 11d.

1984. Building survey.
During assessment of No. 50 Norfolk Street (NHER 58826), a wall was uncovered between No. 50 and No. 51 (NHER 58813). It has been suggested that this wall is part of the remains of St John the Baptist's Hospital.

May 2010. Watching brief.
Twenty piles were sunk under archaeological supervision during development of a formerly vacant lot within the historic core of King's Lynn.
No evidence for the medieval hospital of St John was recorded. Finds were limited to a single sherd of late-17th century pottery.
