1849.
Brass seal found, depicting a man with lion's tail, star, and arrowhead, with inscription 'I was a man'.
Information from (S1).
Suggest that this may be connected with Simon Browne of Shepton Mallet, Somerset, a 17th century lexicographer who went mad and believed that he had become a beast.
